Operation phantom fury 759th12/5/2023 ![]() The Allawi government vowed to crush resistance, using U.S. In addition, both former Ba'athist elements and militant Shia groups engaged in sabotage, terrorism, open rebellion, and establishing their own security zones in all or part of a dozen cities. The continuing insurgencies, poor state of the Iraqi Army, disorganized condition of police and security forces, as well as the lack of revenue hampered their efforts to assert control. The Allawi government, with significant numbers of holdovers from the Coalition Provisional Authority, began to engage in attempts to secure control of the oil infrastructure, the source of Iraq's foreign currency, and control of the major cities of Iraq. The CPA then put Iyad Allawi in power ultimately he was only marginally more popular than Chalabi. This incident was the turning point in the failed American efforts to install Ahmed Chalabi as leader of the interim government. His militia was incorporated into the Iraqi security forces and al-Sadr is now a special envoy. Al-Sadr then declared a national cease fire, and opened negotiations with the American and government forces. Through the months of July and August, a series of skirmishes in and around Najaf culminated with the Imman Ali Mosque itself under siege, only to have a peace deal brokered by al-Sistani in late August. He defied the American military by taking refuge in the Holy City of Najaf. The CPA then attempted to arrest al-Sadr on murder charges. This resulted in mass anti-American demonstrations. The CPA soon realized it had lost control and closed down his popular newspaper. Militia leader Muqtada al-Sadr used his grass-roots organization and Mahdi Militia of over a thousand armed men to take control of the streets of Baghdad. The government began the process of moving towards elections, though the insurgency, and the lack of cohesion within the government itself, led to repeated delays. In June 2004, under the auspices of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1546 the Coalition transferred limited sovereignty to a caretaker government, whose first act was to begin the trial of Saddam Hussein. Gameplay In this screenshot, Cal Kestis, the game's protagonist, fights two AT-STs with his lightsaber. A sequel, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, was released in April 2023. It was nominated for several end-of-the-year accolades, including Best Action/Adventure Game at The Game Awards 2020. It was a commercial success, selling more than 10 million copies by 2020. The game received generally favorable reviews, with critics praising the game's combat, characters, performance, and world design, though it received criticisms for the story, technical issues and lack of polish at release. Revealed in May 2016, the game was released for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One in November 2019, and for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and Series S in June 2021. The music, composed by Stephen Barton and Gordy Haab, was recorded at Abbey Road Studios with the London Symphony Orchestra and the Bach Choir of London. Ben Burtt provided the voice for Cal's companion droid BD-1, while Forest Whitaker reprised his role from Rogue One as Saw Gerrera. The game's voice cast includes Cameron Monaghan as Cal Kestis and Debra Wilson as his mentor Cere. The game's visuals were influenced by Rogue One and Star Wars Rebels, while the combat and levels were inspired by Metroid Prime, Dark Souls, and The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker. The game began development as an original title unrelated to Star Wars, but Electronic Arts felt the action would work well as a Star Wars game, convincing Lucasfilm to authorize and consult on the project. ![]() The game was directed by Stig Asmussen, who joined Respawn in 2014. The game adopts a Metroidvania style of level design where new areas are accessed as Cal unlocks skills and abilities. The player can use Kestis' lightsaber and Force powers to defeat enemies, including stormtroopers, wild beasts and bounty hunters. It follows Jedi Padawan Cal Kestis, who becomes a target of the Galactic Empire and is hunted throughout the galaxy by the Imperial Inquisitors while attempting to complete his training, reconcile with his troubled past, and rebuild the fallen Jedi Order. The story is set in the Star Wars universe, five years after Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. Things like a camera that never seems to be at the right angle, guns that constantly miss for some reason and bullet-sponge enemies ensure that you’ll constantly be frustrated while trying to enjoy the title’s otherwise interesting story. While its core gameplay is solid enough, with satisfying shooting and a variety of weapons, that core is completely let down by an astounding number of stupid design choices. Unlike most titles on the market, Weird West is a top-down twin-stick shooter akin to Desperados 3, and again unlike most games, it’s not a very good one. Little known fact: In the American Wild West, doors were too expensive so many toilets didn’t have them.īut, the bad news is the same can’t be said for Weird West’s gameplay, which all but ruins what would’ve otherwise been a pretty good game. The title uses a cel-shaded art style in combination with dialogue-heavy cutscenes to tell its narrative in a way that’s ultimately engaging in ways that the majority of games (save for, yes, Red Dead Redemption 2) can’t, and it’s incredibly hard to put down the title because of this. The characters, the world and graphics of Weird West all ensure this, too. Throughout the plot, you (and by extension the characters you play as) are forced to deal with not only the realities of a quasi-steampunk version of the American Wild West, but also big boy meaning of life questions that will leave you pondering as you roam in-game ponderosas and whatever you do in your daily life after you beat the game. The more banal questlines often border on cliche, but the ones that put the “weird” in Weird West are genuinely interesting. ![]() The good news is that all five of these stories, as well as the dozens of other mini-narratives within it and the overarching chronicle, are generally excellent. The story starts off simple enough with a bounty hunter seeking revenge on the person who killed their family, but as the 10-20 hour tale progresses, it gets increasingly strange with plots about pigmen, ghost seers and everything in between. The story follows five protagonists in an anthology-style narrative wherein each character needs to contend with, and ultimately solve, a specific problem that they or their community are dealing with. Much like the oft-mentioned Red Dead Redemption 2, Weird West is a game all about, well, the American Wild West. And, if you’re wondering that yourself, the good, the bad and the ugly news is that Weird West isn’t worth it, because much like the dozens of films that tried to copy The Outlaw Josey Wales in the ‘70s, it’s a title that simply sits in the shadow of Rockstar’s infinitely better entry in the genre. And while that’s all well and good for people who enjoy slinging a six shooter, those who don’t are regularly forced to question whether or not they should bother picking up this year’s westerly adventure. ![]() What was once a forlorn setting mostly reserved for pulpy action movies quickly became the environment for games trying to win awards from Geoff Keighley, and even four years after Rockstar released that title, it’s still a place that the industry is trying to (slowly) explore. ![]() For years, the best gunslinging title was Call of Juarez: Gunslinger, but in 2018, Red Dead Redemption 2 came along and changed that. It doesn’t seem like it was that long ago when Wild West games were a rarity. ![]() Eric thomas buster douglas12/5/2023 ![]() As for my father and I, we had watched this historic upset at my then girlfriend’s house. ![]() As for Tyson, his entire downfall that began that evening in Tokyo will be written in full detail in an upcoming article. This would be the highlight of Buster’s career as eight months later he would get knocked out by Evander Holyfield and lose the undisputed heavyweight title, which I chronicled earlier in this series. The greatest upset in boxing history and maybe sports history had occurred. He got up just as referee Octavio Meyran counted to 10. Tyson was attempting to get up and put his mouthpiece back in at the same time. Finally, midway through round 10, Buster landed a vicious right uppercut, left hook, right cross and left hook combination that drove Tyson onto the canvas. After Buster cleared his head, he resumed using the heavy jab and right crosses and gave Tyson a wicked beating the second half of the round. Douglas barely got up at the count of nine just as the bell sounded to end the round.ĭespite having a challenger in deep trouble going into round nine, Tyson, because he had taken such a one-sided beating before scoring the knockdown, had absolutely nothing left to finish off Buster. Douglas battered Tyson from pillar to post through the eighth round and in his overzealousness, walked into a sizzling right uppercut that dropped the grief stricken challenger. Buster was in such a zone that he felt Mike needed a miracle from God to overturn the beating he was taking. While we were watching the fight, my father was awestruck by Buster’s ring generalship that evening. Combined with a 12-inch reach advantage, Douglas used a tremendous jab and movement over the first seven rounds to give the champion a one sided boxing lesson. At 6’4 and 235 pounds, Buster was a good half foot taller than the baddest man on the planet. Buster had other plans.īuster Douglas was in the best shape of his life that night. Tyson had unified all the world titles and Douglas was a mere stop gap before facing Evander Holyfield in what looked to be the biggest money making fight in combative sports history. Looking back, I’ve always felt that it was a combination of his mother dying and Tyson not taking him seriously that helped Buster put on the performance of a lifetime.ĭespite having personal problems with his ex-wife Robin Givens and his tumultuous breakups with former manager Bill Cayton and trainer Kevin Rooney, Mike still was as dominating as ever going into the ring that night as he attempted to successfully defend his world heavyweight for the 10th time since winning the WBC version in November of 1986. What my father and I didn’t take into consideration that night was the fact that Buster’s mother had passed away a little over three weeks before he was to fight Tyson. While Pop didn’t think Douglas had the heart and determination to pull off the upset, he wouldn’t be surprised if Douglas hurt Mike as he was six inches taller than the so called baddest man on the planet. Right before the night of the Mike Tyson-Buster Douglas fight, I reminded my father of what he had told me over eight years prior to this evening. Holmes was able to recover and would eventually stop Snipes in the 11th round, but not before almost getting knocked out. When that happened, my father smiled at me with that I told you so look. ![]() ![]() Then all of a sudden in round seven, Snipes landed a picture perfect missile of a right cross that dropped and badly hurt Holmes. For the first six rounds, my theory was on the money as Holmes completely outclassed Snipes with his battering ram of a left jab and well placed right crosses. My father explained to me that when two big men are in the ring, anything can happen. I remember being 13 years old and telling my father the night Larry Holmes defended his world heavyweight title against Renaldo Snipes that this fight was going to be a one-sided mismatch. ![]() Undying soulbinder12/5/2023 ![]() The Loaded Sharpshooter is a DPS-Focused Class that deals massive burst damage. Sit at sofa distance away and it’s very good though, particularly with high-def stuff and things that are digitally sourced rather than come in through the SCART sockets. ![]() The picture quality isn’t fantastic compared with a CRT. I spotted a two-metre one behind the till that cost £30 (still a rip-off) and was asked if I was sure because the other one was “more powerful”.Īs I said, plan ahead and maybe sue them for fraud later on.Īnyway, everything’s nice and tidy behind our new TV – it even has a built-in cable tidier and a strap with a screw that you’re supposed to ram into the TV stand in case the TV topples off. Go into Curry’s (Lewisham branch), which chooses not to mark the prices of the cables on the shelves, and you won’t find out until you get to the till that they’re charging £45 for a metre long cable. Word of advice though: plan ahead and don’t get an HDMI lead from Currys at the last minute. The HDMI connection also means I get the best possible high-def picture out of the Apple TV, which is actually really good, I now discover. I’ve also been able to get rid of a multi-plug. In fact, the HDMI socket means I’ve been able to get rid of not only a SCART-sharer but also an RGB converter that enabled my Apple TV to work with SCART. That’s enough for my DVD, Sky box and Apple TV. It has six input sockets – two SCARTs, two HDMIs, one PC and one component. On the whole, after a week of use, I’m quite impressed with it. Thirdly, the adverts have claymation bunnies in them. Everyone else appears to have been going for 40“, but we wanted something smaller than before and less power hungry, so 26” works out well. They don’t deliver, so that saves them from WEEE – the gits – but it does make it all a bit cheaper. Secondly, Sainsbury’s have been selling 26” Sony Bravias for £349. Mathematicians call it an affine transformation, Mac users call it the ”Dock Genie“ effect – everyone else, particularly in SE London, just calls it ”f*cked“.
